Why cylinders need this and cartridges don't

An 8g cartridge is sized to be used in one go and clips directly into a charger holder, so it never needs a regulator. A cylinder PrimeWhip's 320g through to 3000g bodies, or equivalents from other brands holds far more gas at higher pressure than a single charge requires, so a regulator sits between the two, stepping the pressure down and letting the kitchen control how much gas reaches the whipper on each charge.

Buying a cylinder without also budgeting for a regulator is a common first-time mistake, since the cylinder alone cannot be connected to a standard whipper.
