Why argon and not the vacuum-pump alternative

Some wine preservers work by pumping air back out of the bottle, but that still leaves some oxygen behind. Argon works differently: it is heavier than air and sits over the wine as a blanket once the air is displaced, which is why zzysh states it protects against oxidation more completely than a vacuum system does across an eight-week-plus window.
